Mahone Bay Centre

.

Lunenburg was founded in 1753 and Mahone Bay in 1754, by a group of people known as the ‘foreign’ Protestants. They came from central and south-western Germany, Switzerland and Montbeliard under the auspices of the British government. They came to the New World to farm, but within a generation turned from the land to the sea and became fishermen and skilled shipwrights. This illustrated presentation will trace the origins of the people, the early settlement of Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, along with the traits, customs and legacy that has survived today of this remarkable group.

.

Ralph Getson is an eighth generation ‘foreign’ Protestant. His ancestor came to Nova Scotia from northern Germany in 1751. The Getsons became fishermen out of LaHave, NS. Ralph holds degrees in history and education from Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s Universities. Since 1984 he has been Curator of Education at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, responsible for school programmes, exhibits and research. Ralph lives in Lunenburg and has a keen interest in local history.

Greek Family Reunion

.

The year 2011 marks the 200th year of Alex the Greek coming to Nova Scotia. From humble roots his descendants have gone on to many parts of this continent to become proud Canadians and Americans. It would be a shame not to celebrate this momentous occasion. Richard Greek (of the Pudding and Sausage Greeks) and I are spearheading a 3-day event in August to mark the occasion. The logical place to celebrate was in Blue Rocks itself; however that location had to be reconsidered when we were unable to find a large enough venue in the small community, so some activities will have to out of necessity be in Lunenburg itself. The dates run from the 12th to the 14th of August 2011.

.

The capacity at the Legion Hall in Lunenburg is 150 seated guests. Tickets will be limited and sold in advance of the dinner, so that we can give the Legion Ladies an accurate head count. The cost is $15.00 per ticket for the dinner on Saturday. Richard and I are taking advance ticket orders and can be contacted at ingrid.greek@ns.sympatico.ca or greekspudding@ns.aliantzinc.ca to make payment arrangements. Our phone numbers are Ingrid 543-8755 and Richard 688-1466 (evenings) 543-6049 (daytime).
